Abstract

This article draws on the recent finding that the human brain is caused to shine with joy by the practice of cooperation and solidarity towards others, to explore the main historical and conceptual antecedents of the association between economy and solidarity. It describes the primary conceptualization of economy to highlight the richness and deepness of the concept – particularly when viewed from a substantive perspective – and points out the contributions resulting from a vast production in the field of economy and in social and solidary economy. It also makes reference to experiences of solidarity to illustrate the forms taken previous to the modern era and contemplates the reach of its contemporary manifestations which take place within a socio-economic system that is not motivated by nor aims for solidarity.
